No scope to restore caretaker govt system: AL

The observation came at an emergency meeting of AL presidium with party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, held at her official Ganobhaban residence.

After the meeting, party`s joint secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif briefed the media. Office secretary of the party and State Minister for Housing and Public Works Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan was present.

Hanif said that about the caretaker government system, the verdict of the country`s apex court is very specific and the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) also dismissed the possibility of instating caretaker government system through discussions.

Mentioning different local government polls and by-elections, including upazila parishads (UZ), municipality and union parishads (UP) held in the last three years during this government, Hanif said that all the elections were free and fair.

“It has been proved that the Election Commission (EC) was able to work independently,” he added.

The presidium meeting also decided to include former student leader Enamul Haque Shamim as the new member of the party’s central working committee.

The AL joint secretary also informed about his party’s upcoming programmes marking the International Mother Language Day on February 21, discussion meeting on February 22 and father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic speech on March 7.

Answering a question on interim-government, Hanif said that discussion could take place in parliament regarding any issue of national interest and urged the opposition to come up with any formula in the House.

He said that the nation expects that the opposition would come in parliament in a bid to hold the next general election in a free and fair manner.
