JU students call off fast-unto-death on PM’s assurance

The students demonstrating under the banners of 'Jahangirnagar Sangskritik Jote' and 'Sontrasher Biruddhe Jahangirnagar' began the hunger strike on May 1, demanding resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof. Shariff Enamul Kabir.

Their fast-unto-death programme was also aimed at protesting the assault on some cultural activists by Bangladesh Chhatra League men on April 28.

New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, Columnist Rehnuma Ahmed, lawmaker and noted actress Tarana Halim, singer Krisna Koli, actress Banya Mirza, rights activist Khushi Kabir and other noted personalities expressed their solidarity with the demonstrating students.

Teachers, disloyal to the VC, under the banner of ‘Shikkhak Somaj’ demonstrated for the last few months to press home their demands, including the resignation of the VC.

They, however, postponed their demonstration on May 3 on assurance from the Prime Minister that she would look into the matter.

Shikkhak Somaj has been demanding the resignation of VC Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir since the murder of Zubair Ahmed, an English department student, on January 9.
