China on Sunday reaffirmed BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia about its support to Bangladesh’s various sectors, including construction of a deep seaport at Sonadia in the Bay of Bengal and the second Padma Bridge.
The reassurance came at a meeting between a high-level Chinese delegation, led by Li Changchuan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and Khaleda Zia at a city hotel.
After the 45-minute meeting that started around 2:35pm, BNP vice chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury briefed reporters about the outcomes of the meeting.
He said Khaleda and the Chinese delegation elaborately discussed how the existing relations between China and Bangladesh, the people of China and Bangladesh, and the BNP and CPC can be strengthened further.
The BNP chief mainly focused on four issues — constructing a deep seaport at Sonadia, and the second Padma Bridge, introducing an integrated communication system in the country and establishing road and rail links between Chittagong and Kunming. These issues were also discussed with top Chinese officials during her just-concluded visit to the country with a positive response.
Khaleda returned home from China on Saturday wrapping up her weeklong visit at the invitation of the ruling CPC.
During her stay in China, the BNP chief had meetings with key leaders of the CPC and high government officials, including Chinese Vice President Xi Jingpin, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Vice Minister of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) Chen Fengxiang.
The Chinese leaders assured Khaleda of their continued support to Bangladesh in its economic and infrastructural development.
Briefing the reporters, the BNP vice chairman said Li Changchuan responded positively to all the proposals of the former Bangladesh premier, saying his government is ready to give technical and financial assistance to construct the deep seaport and the second Padma Bridge.
About the introduction of the integrated communication system, the CPC delegation said they will talk to their government as to how China can help Bangladesh modernise and develop its internal communications system, including the road and railway.
Li Changchuan also assured Khaleda that his country will take initiatives on priority basis to set up Chittagong-Myanmar and Kunming road and rail links after discussion with Myanmar.
Mentioning Khaleda’s recent China visit, the China delegation said it was a significant tour which will help reinforce the existing ties between the two nations.
Li Changchuan recalled that the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China were established by late President Ziaur Rahman, and spoke of President Zia’s invaluable contributions towards strengthening the relations.
He also invited Khaleda to visit again his country at her convenient time.
Khaleda also underscored the need for increasing contact between the people of Bangladesh and China at the grassroots level through exchange of delegations at various levels.
She also spoke of strengthening party-to-party relations between the CPC and the BNP as it will contribute towards giving the bilateral relations a further boost.
Khaleda wished the upcoming 18th Congress of the Communist Party of China a success and expressed her confidence that China will attain greater success under the dynamic leadership of the party.
BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, vice-chairmen Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, chairperson’s advisers Riaz Rahman and Sabihuddin Ahmed, and press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel were also present at the meeting.
